Days after a renowned cyclist accused her coach of sexual harassment, a top Indian female sailor has alleged that a coach made her “uncomfortable” during a foreign exposure trip to Germany and the Netherlands. The complainant reached out to the Yachting Association of India (YAI) several times but when she did not get any response, she sought Sports Authority of India’s intervention on Wednesday night.

“I and my crew are requesting SAI and Federation (YAI) to please change him (the coach) as its (sic) impossible to perform with him. We are in the position to get medal in Asian Games and go to the Olympics,” she said in her letter to SAI.

SAI has sought a report from the association by the end of Thursday, asking if the sailor had approached them earlier, and if so why the matter was not taken seriously. According to a statement released by SAI, it stated: “SAI has received a complaint from a female sailor who is currently on a foreign exposure camp in Germany. The camp has been proposed and organised by the Yachting Association of India and funded by SAI through ACTC (Annual Calendar for Tournament and Competitions), as is the norm. In her complaint the athlete has said that a coach accompanying the contingent is making her uncomfortable. The coach in question has been appointed by the federation and was included in the contingent as per the proposal of the federation,” the statement read.

“In her complaint, the athlete has also stated that she has raised this issue with the federation a few times in the past but has not received any response and has hence written to SAI for intervention. On receipt of the complaint, SAI has asked for a report from the federation seeking clarification on when and how many times the athlete had complained to the federation and why no response was extended to her. SAI has sought this report from the federation. Meanwhile, SAI has reached out to the athlete and she has said that ‘mental pressure’ is created by the coach during training, but did not cite any sexual harassment issues,” the statement added.

YAI, in its report, said hearing was done on Thursday with all the stakeholders, including the sailors and the coach, and the report would be submitted to SAI.

SAI on Wednesday had terminated the contract of chief coach RK Sharma, acting on a preliminary report of an inquiry committee after a female cyclist accused him of “inappropriate behaviour”.
