Captain Shakib-Al Hasan remains doubtful for Bangladesh's crucial World Cup clash against India in Pune on Thursday.

The left-handed spinner all-rounder, who appeared to be in discomfort while batting during Bangladesh's previous game against New Zealand in Chennai last Friday, has sustained a Grade I tear in his quadriceps, which makes him doubtful for the India clash.

"We have learnt from the team doctor that Shakib has sustained a Grade I tear in his quadriceps. So, at present, his chances of featuring in the India game are still 50-50. But it's not that he's ruled out of the tournament or out for a longer period," Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar told The Telegraph from Dhaka on Sunday.

Bangladesh though prefer to stay optimistic about Shakib's participation against India. "The team support staff is working very hard to get Shakib match fit for Thursday.

"The problem is, Shakib's absence implies we have to bring in two players, considering the workload he takes both as a batter and a bowler. Nonetheless, we are hoping for the best and believe Shakib will be there for us on Thursday," Bashar said.

In spite of the discomfort, Shakib scored 40 and also bowled his full quota of 10 overs against the Black Caps, picking up a wicket and conceding 54 runs.

If Shakib misses out in Pune, keeper-batsman Liton Das may lead Bangladesh. But who comes in place of Shakib appears to be a bigger headache for Bangladesh, who were thrashed by England and New Zealand after beating Afghanistan in their Cup opener.

Besides, thrusting Shakib into the XI even if he isn't 100 per cent match-fit may boomerang as Bangladesh will still have five more games following the one against India.
