KL Rahul went through a similar hernia procedure in 2022. The National Cricket Academy’s medical team decided to send Surya to Germany on a priority basis keeping in mind his importance to the team for the June tournament in US and the West Indies.

The NCA had made similar decisions to send the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer overseas for surgical procedures, besides Rahul too.

Surya left for Munich on Tuesday. He had a Grade-II tear in his ankle and the surgery ruled him out of the T20I series versus Afghanistan.

Surya, who hurt his ankle when he got off balance while stopping a ball while fielding in the final T20I against South Africa, had been leading the team in the absence of another injured player Hardik Pandya.

Pandya had been leading the T20 team unless Rohit Sharma decided to make himself available for the ongoing series against Afghanistan. His century in the final T20I on Wednesday will set to rest all lingering doubts over his form in the shortest format.

Pandya, who was recently named Mumbai Indians captain replacing Rohit, is likely to be available for the IPL. The tournament will provide match practice to a host of Indian stars before the World Cup.
