New captain Shai Hope scored an unbeaten century as West Indies defeated hosts South Africa by 48 runs in the second ODI on Saturday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat at BuffaloPark in East London, Hope’s superb 128 not out anchored the West Indies score of 335/8 in their 50 overs as he struck five fours and seven sixes in his 115-ball innings.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma struck a career-best 144 from 118 balls in the home side’s reply, but they were bowled out for 287 in 41.4 overs in their attempt to keep up with the required run rate. The first game at the same venue was washed out.

The final match of the three-game series will be played in Potchefstroom on Tuesday.

South Africa handed ODI debuts to four players, batsmen Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs, and seamer Gerald Coetzee.

Black Caps sniff sweep

Wellington: New Zealand moved closer to a 2-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka on Day III of the second Test by dismissing the visitors for 164 and reducing them to 113/2, still 303 runs in arrears, after enforcing the follow-on.

After Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls posted double centuries as the hosts made 580/4 declared on Day II, it was the turn of New Zealand’s bowlers to take centre stage at Wellington’s Basin Reserve. Spinner Michael Bracewell and seamer Matt Henry took three wickets apiece.

Despite a battling 89 from skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka lost six wickets with the addition of only 55 runs after lunch on Sunday.

With the threat of rain hanging over the fifth day of the match, Blacks Caps skipper Tim Southee wasted no time in enforcing the follow-on. Karunaratne played another captain’s innings, recording a fourth half-century in his last five innings. At stumps, Kusal Mendis was batting on 50.
