In a surprising turn of events, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been appointed as the new captain of the Chennai Super Kings, taking over from M.S. Dhoni.

The announcement comes just a day before the team's first game of the season against Royal Challengers Bangalore, making waves as the IPL 2024 kicks off.

The IPL made the announcement on X, accompanied by a picture of Gaikwad among the league's captains, signaling a new era for CSK under his leadership.

Gaikwad, a rising star in Indian cricket, has represented the national team in six ODIs and 19 T20s. Since making his debut for CSK in 2020, he has played 52 matches for the team, known for their five IPL championship wins.

Last season, he showcased his exceptional talent by scoring 590 runs in 16 matches, demonstrating why he's considered one of the most promising openers in cricket today.

The decision for Dhoni to pass on the leadership baton to Gaikwad comes as CSK prepares for a future without their iconic captain. Dhoni, whose retirement is anticipated at the season's end, has been instrumental in CSK's success over the years. The franchise believes that transitioning leadership while Dhoni is still an active player will ensure a smooth changeover and set the team on a path to continued success.

In their statement, CSK expressed confidence in Gaikwad's leadership, acknowledging his significant contribution to the team since 2019. As the IPL 2024 season commences, all eyes will be on Gaikwad as he steps into the large shoes left by Dhoni, aiming to guide CSK to more glorious victories.
