Former India cricketer Jacob Martin is in a critical condition at a Vadodara hospital and desperately seeking funds to meet the expenses associated with his treatment.

The 46-year-old, who played 10 ODIs, met with an accident while travelling on a scooter and was admitted to the hospital on December 28. He suffered injuries to his lung and liver and has been in ventilator since.

Martin’s wife had appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently to help her meet the mounting hospital bills. The family managed to pay Rs 5 lakh while the BCCI acted promptly and sanctioned another Rs 5 lakh as per a benevolent scheme.

Former BCCI and Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) secretary Sanjay Patel has come forward to garner funds for Martin’s treatment.

“Once I came to know about the accident I tried to help Jacob’s family in every possible way. I have spoken to few well wishers — including the Maharaja of Baroda Samarjitsinh Gaekwad who donated Rs 1 lakh — and accumulated around Rs 5 lakh for his treatment,” Patel told The Telegraph on Saturday.

“The hospital bills have already crossed Rs 11 lakh, and at one point, the hospital had even stopped providing medicine. The BCCI deposited the amount directly and the treatment hasn’t been affected thereafter,” he said.

According to hospital estimates, the approximate cost associated with Martin’s treatment is Rs 70,000 per day.

“The BCA has handed over Rs 2.70 lakh (after a deduction of Rs 30,000 as TDS) only today but more is expected of them… After all, it was under his captaincy that Baroda won the Ranji Trophy. Recently, the association had handed over Rs 22 lakh to the widow of a former Ranji Trophy player,” Patel said.

He informed that he has already spoken to former state players Zaheer Khan and the Pathan brothers and they are ready to offer financial assistance. Patel also plans to get in touch with few other stars and appeal for help.
