A couple of hours before the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that Woorkeri Raman would be the next head coach of the women’s team, The Telegraph spoke to one of the three ‘selectors’.

‘Selectors’ Kapil Dev, Aunshuman Gaekwad and Shanta Rangaswamy were appointed by chief Administrator Vinod Rai, despite a strong objection from Diana Edulji, the other Administrator.

The ‘selector’ said: “We went strictly on merit, the quality of presentation, the manner in which our questions were answered and, generally, the way the overall discussion went…

“We were not at all concerned with what ODI captain Mithali Raj or T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur or even T20I vice-captain Smriti Mandhana had to say on the issue.”

While Mithali tore into the last coach, Ramesh Powar, the latter received a massive endorsement from both Harmanpreet and Smriti.

With Powar, who was “good in a way” during the interview, overlooked, it’s to be seen how the India dressing room functions under the new coach.

Last year, Rai in particular, had acceded to a ‘demand’ from men’s captain Virat Kohli to appoint Ravi Shastri as the head coach.

This time, Rai took a different line in dealing with an “appeal” from both Harmanpreet and Smriti to offer a fresh contract to Powar.
