Former captain Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday said he was “surprised” at not finding Ajinkya Rahane and Shubman Gill’s names in the Indian One-Day squad for the tour of West Indies.

He expressed dismay at the selection of different players for all three formats of the game, saying that it was not about “making all happy” but instilling consistency in the team. “There are many in the squad who can play all formats. Surprised not to see Shubman Gill, Rahane in the One Day squad,” Dada tweeted.

“Time has come for Indian selectors to pick same players in all formats of the game for rhythm and confidence. Too few are playing in all formats. Great teams had consistent players. It’s not about making all happy but picking the best for the country and be consistent. @bcci,” he said in another tweet.

Gill, a right-hand batsman from Punjab, too expressed disappointment at not being selected for the Caribbean tour in all three formats.

“It was disappointing not to get picked but I am not going to spend time thinking over it. I'll keep scoring runs and performing to the best of my ability to impress the selectors,” he said, according to media reports, after the teams were announced.

The 19-year-old batsman recently scored 218 in four matches against the West Indies A team at an average of 54.50. A farmer’s son, Gill shot to fame after winning the Player of the Tournament in the the Under-19 World Cup early this year, during which he scored a ton against arch-rival Pakistan in the semifinal.

Although Rahane, a veteran middle-order batsman, has been selected for the Test team, he was given a pass for the ODI and T20 squads.

Except Virat Kohli (captain), K.L. Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant, no other player has been selected for all formats, which was what Ganguly cited.

The team will start its campaign from August 3 with a T20 match.
