The Dibrugarh and Dhemaji district administrations in Upper Assam have issued directives for streamlining traffic on the Bogibeel bridge.

After the inauguration of the bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25, there has been a huge rush of vehicles from both sides of the bridge.

On Saturday, the Dibrugarh administration issued a directive requesting the police to immediately deploy personnel and adequate force for traffic management on the bridge.

The Dhemaji administration also issued an order on Saturday, prohibiting drivers of vehicles from stopping for more than three minutes on the bridge and warned of action if the rule was not followed. The administration also said policemen and security forces will be deployed on the bridge to monitor the movement of people and vehicles.

A seven-year-old boy was killed and another was injured on Thursday in two separate accidents on the Bogibeel bridge and its approach road.

John Pame, 7, died after being hit by a vehicle on the approach road at Kulajan in Dhemaji.

In another incident, Saurav Moran, 7, was critically injured after being hit by a car and admitted to a private nursing home in Dibrugarh.

“Traffic management is very important for smooth movement of vehicles over the bridge. The bridge is a lifeline for the people of Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, ending a decades-long communication bottleneck. Some people are parking their cars and taking selfies on the bridge, causing hindrance to smooth traffic flow,” said Bipul Kalita, a Dibrugarh resident.

Union railway minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday visited Guwahati and asserted that the Bogibeel bridge will not be named after any person.

The Eastern Assam Chambers of Commerce and Industry president, Bhudev Phukan, on Sunday hailed the decision of Goyal to not name the bridge after any person.
