Police arrested three youths at Garakheeya Doul, under Pulibor police station in Jorhat district on Wednesday for duping people by impersonating as doctors. Some medical instruments and a car have been seized.
The police said Biswajyoti Dutta of Titabor Dhekiajuli Kahar Gaon, Ujjal Borah of 2 No. Hensuwa Gaon and Diganta Neog of Pulibor Bhatemora Gaon were produced before a local court in Jorhat. They have been remanded in two-day police custody.
“We took the trio into custody for two days for further interrogation. We booked them under Sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 448 (Punishment for house-trespass) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC and our investigation is on,” the officer-in-charge of Pulibor police station, Durlav Medhi, said.
He added: “Taking advantage of the Covid-19 scare, the trio created a fake Facebook account in the name of an NGO headed by one Dr Prince Borah Saikia. They impersonated as doctors by donning white coat and carrying medical equipment like stethoscope. They would tend to patients and fleeced them at several places in Titabor, Neemati and Pulibor in the name of coronavirus treatment.”
Medhi said during interrogation Dutta confessed that he had masterminded the impersonations and the other two helped him. He created the fake Facebook account.
