The Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee, a conglomerate of five leading civil society organisations and student bodies, on Saturday said its delegation would approach Election Commission members in Delhi with the request to reschedule the December 3 (Sunday) date of counting.

The NGOCC, which comprises the influential Central Young Mizo Association and the Mizo Zirlai Pawl, issued a statement after an emergent meeting in Aizawl, saying that if discussions fail to yield the desired result, it will organise a massive protest.

The ECI had fixed December 3 as the day for counting for all five states but leading organisations and political parties in Mizoram submitted representations to the poll panel, and also sent reminders, to change the date as it fell on a Sunday, a sacred day in the Christian-majority state when most are busy with Church-related activities.

The NGOs and CSOs wanted the dates deferred to December 4 or 5.
