The official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Opposition Congress in Assam was hacked on Wednesday morning, according to a complaint lodged by the Assam PCC’s social media and IT department with the city police here.

The handle was hacked at around 4am and the last post made through this handle was at 11pm on Tuesday, six hours after the scheduled close of the third and final phase of polling in Assam, which saw a voter turnout of 85.45 per cent, the highest compared to the first and second phase.

Ratul Kalita, the chairman of the Assam PCC social media and IT department, in his complaint to the Bhangagarh police station, said the official X handle had a lot of data by which “we reached lakh of the public” while requesting the police to arrest the culprits.

Before lodging the complaint, the PCC’s media team had also held a press meet, thanking the people of the state for supporting the party in the polls. The party also exuded confidence of doing better than the ruling BJP-led alliance but did not reveal the tally of seats they were sure of winning. Reports suggest that the Congress has put up a good fight in at least six seats but will it be good enough to win will be known only on June 4, the day of counting.

However, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday night that the four seats that went to polls in the final phase, the ruling NDA will win three while there was a contest in one seat for “obvious reasons”.

He did not name the seat but political observers said he was alluding to Muslim-majority Dhubri seat where there is a triangular contest between the ruling AGP, Opposition AIUDF and Congress.
