The internet is abuzz with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Gaganyaan mission. What makes it stand out from other Indian space programmes is that it envisages a demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching three members to an orbit of 400 km for three days, and bringing them safely back on earth by landing in Indian sea waters. About 140 crore Indians have their hopes locked onto Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla, who will be the first Indians to go to space in 40 years, that too in an Indian rocket. The project is being driven by inhouse expertise from Indian industries, academia and cutting edge technology. Currently, the Gaganyaan is expected to launch between 2024-25. We wish the men the best for the mission.
