Smoke On The Water makes every rock playlist and is arguably one of the most popular rock anthems of all time. Released in 1972, the iconic number is a part of Deep Purple’s sixth studio album — Machine Head. The lineup of the troupe at the time was Ritchie Blackmore on the guitar, Ian Gillan on vocals and harmonica, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on keys and Ian Paice on drums. The story goes that Smoke on the Water was inspired by the fire at Frank Zappa’s concert in Montreux Casino – where the band had travelled to record Machine Head in The Rolling Stones’ mobile studio.
Its iconic introduction, smooth guitar solos and gritty vocals won many a heart and continues to do so today. Tune in, as the song celebrates half a century this year!
