My job on a cruise liner takes me to beautiful places all over the world. Last month, Dubrovnik in Croatia got added to my list of destinations. And I didn’t miss the chance to visit Fort Lovrijenac, which doubles as the Red Keep in King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Lots of the scenes are filmed at this fort, including the tournament thrown in honour of King Joffrey’s name day in season two

On my way to the fort, I spotted this drinking water fountain made of white marble dating back to the Middle Ages, well maintained by the authorities
Kayaks wait for enthusiasts in shallow waters beside the fort
Castle on the rock just outside the fort. Inside the fort you get a feeling of the Medieval Ages as we were taught in our history classes in school
The long lanes, just a bit winding at times, reminded the Satyajit Ray fan in me of the lanes inside the Sonar Kella (golden fortress) in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer
Lots of tourist shops, local markets as well. People live in buildings around the marketplace. The quaint shops sell vegetables to clothes and candies, meats and all daily necessities
From fresh cut fruits for the health-conscious to sweetmeats of a myriad nature, the shops spoilt one and all for choice
Photos from a bright and enticing candy shop that seemed a favourite for people of all ages
You get a beautiful view of the area from the top of the fort
Dubrovnik is a beautiful city and I enjoyed the tuna steak which was cooked medium rare with a glass of Blush wine at one of the eateries dotting the snaking lanes around the fort. Acting on a whim, I followed it up with a glass of draught beer
