On International Women’s Day, today, let’s celebrate eight Kolkata-based entrepreneurs, who are not only queens in their own right but are also business icons, thanks to their vision, mission, passion and the zeal to carve their own identities. Kakali Biswas of ‘Dora by Phoenix’ 

Kakali is a well-known name in both the fashion world and Tollywood circles. Her fashion label, Dora by Phoenix, is a favourite among celebrities such as Mamata Shankar and Paoli Dam. Kakali, an influencer in fashion and lifestyle, is often spotted in her label’s exquisite saris. Dora by Phoenix has made its spot in the wardrobes of fashionistas since 2019, for its creative fusion of traditional weaves with quirky prints. She is joined by her daughter, Medha Nandi, who helps her mum with the creative aspects of the business.

Gauri Saha, co-founder of ‘Naksh the Label’

Gauri Saha’s label, Naksh, continues to reign supreme in the fashion scene. Recently, actress Swastika Mukherjee was spotted donning one of their saris. Naksh has been winning hearts since 2017, offering everything from easy-breezy dresses, trendy blouses to traditional men’s wear and a wide range of saris.

The skincare guru’s radiant skin is an inspiration for many to take TLC seriously.

Sonika Dey of ‘Bunaphile’ 

One of the promising and fast expanding cafes of the city, Bunaphile is the brainchild of Sonika Dey. The young achiever’s success story is an inspiration to many. Sonika started from a 100-square-foot shop using her wedding jewellery as seed money, and soon created an empire — making Bunaphile one of the largest cafes in the city. Artistic finesse meets aesthetics in every jewellery piece crafted by Earthaments. And the creative powerhouse behind those unique accessories is Monalisha Manna, whose life took a 360-degree turn from engineering to creating a jewellery brand. Earthaments boasts a diverse and thriving clientele — from actress Sauraseni Maitra to fashion influencer Pushpak Sen — appealing to young women and brides alike.

Surbhi Bagla of ‘The Logical Lamp’

Accredited by the STEM Academy of the USA, The Logical Lamp is a great initiative that nurtures young minds. Surbhi Bagla, a proponent in the education sector established the first STEM-based academy in Kolkata. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with Arts as a recent addition, helps growing individuals hone their creative and problem-solving skills.

Shaleni S. Biswas of ‘Easy Notes’

Shaleni S. Biswas’s publishing journey began as one of the directors of Chaya Prakashani. Soon, she moved to build her own stationary brand, Easy Notes, during COVID. An avid trekker, who has reached the Everest Base Camp, Shaleni has her goal set towards building her brand as one of the prominent names in India.
