Walk the streets of Kolkata and you are quite likely to run into a wisecracker or two. On August 3 and 4, however, that wisecracker could well have been one of the most popular figures in Bengal history. After all, it was Gopal Bhar who took to strolling around the city earlier this week, covering parts of central Kolkata, interacting with fans and having a gala time overall!

A big hit as the cartoon lead of Sony AATH’s eponymous series, which has crossed 1000 episodes, Gopal Bhar went around Victoria Memorial in a horse cart and devoured the much-loved street food in New Market. Pedestrians were amused to see one of their favourite characters come to life and did not hold back from a quick chat or selfies.

Originally a jester at Raja Krishnachandra’s court in Nadia, Bhar’s brain is never without a thought. Usually smart ones. As he surveyed the streets of Kolkata, he seemed to be involved in a new quest, dwelling on some serious questions. Maybe he was simply preparing himself ahead of his upcoming movie, which will see him play a detective as part of a “comedy extravaganza where he solves mysteries and saves his kingdom”. When, where and how? Only Gopal Bhar knows for now.
