Celebrity chef Kunal Kapur is in Kolkata and trying out all things famous from Kolkata biryani to a joyride on the tram. With a series of updates on his Instagram account, Kapur has been giving his fans glimpses of his visit to Kolkata, and the food recommendations have been pouring in ever since.

The former MasterChef India judge dropped the news of his arrival in Kolkata on Thursday with a video from the airport, right before boarding an early morning flight.

In the video, Kapur can be seen eagerly seeking suggestions, particularly for Kolkata-style biryani. He signed off with a playful remark, saying “bahut bhook lagi hai” (“I am famished”). The response from netizens has been overwhelming, flooding his comments section with recommendations such as Dada Boudi Biryani in Barrackpore, Arsalan, Aminia, Royal Indian Restaurant and Manzilat’s.

Chef Kunal shared with 'My Kolkata' that he tasted the Kolkata-style biryani at Arsalan and Shiraz

The suggestions also included Kolkata favourites like kochuri and aloo’r torkari at Adi Haridas Modak in Shyambazar, Kathi Rolls at Anamika, Jhalmuri near Indian Museum, Sandesh from Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy and dishes from Zakaria Street.Kapur soon after posted a video on Instagram of a few people relishing mutton biryani. The chef shared with My Kolkata that he tasted the Kolkata-style biryani at Arsalan and Shiraz.

While he has been relatively sparse with his posts, it’s evident that Kapur is embracing the Kolkata experience — from taking tram rides while humming along to Kemon Boka Monta Re from the movie Lootera and sharing a montage of photos capturing the cityscape, rain, music performance and a scenic pool view.

The latest updates from Kapur’s dispatches include two videos on Instagram stories, where he greets his fans in true Kolkata style, wishing them a top-of-the-morning. If you have been captivated by Vicky Kaushal’s moves in Gaddiyan Uchiyan, prepare to be charmed even further by Kapur’s cheerful demeanour as he leans on an iconic yellow taxi, leaving you floored with a mischievous smirk. The morning gets even better with another video of the chef taking a leisurely morning walk along the city’s footpaths.

This begs the question: Would it be too much to hope for Kapur to make his acting debut or perhaps give the ramp a chance? We can’t help but wonder.
