Well-known music director Sudhin Dasgupta was born on this day. He contributed generously towards the shaping of the modern Bengali song, both in films and outside, in the post-Independence era, adding new sounds to popular music.

From a young age he could play several musical instruments, both Indian and western. He was also a badminton champion. He worked as assistant to music director Kamal Dasgupta. He was associated with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), one of the most significant Indian cultural movements.

He composed music during the “golden era” of Bengali music, collaborating with the most eminent singers, lyricists and musicians. He had a large collection of folk music.

A few of his most famous compositions are Eto sur aar eto gaan, Ami taar thikana rakhini, Banshbaganer mathar opor chand uthechhe oi and Ekta gaan likho amar jonyo, Aro dure cholo jai from the film Chhadmabeshi is another classic, for which he had also written the lyrics.
