Sister Nivedita was born on this day.

She was born Margaret Elizabeth Noble in Ireland.

A follower of Vivekananda, she also was a tireless ad- vocate of India’s freedom and social justice, especially the progress of women.

She met Vivekananda when he was visiting England from 1895.

She was drawn to his teachings of Vedanta and to his humanistic ideas.

She arrived in India in 1898.

Vivekananda gave her the name Nivedita, which means the devoted one.

In 1902 she opened a school at Calcutta, where courses to train girls
in crafts in addition to academic subjects were taught. The school later became a branch of the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission.

Nivedita was dedicated to social work.

She passionately supported the Swadesi movement.

She died at 44.

She won the love and admiration of the country she had chosen with her compassion, commitment and hard work.
