Nirmaljiban admired Dinesh Gupta, who had been part of an attack at the Writers’ Buildings.

Between 1931 and 1932, Midnapore had seen the killing of two district magistrates. On September 2, 1932, the third, and the most ruthless, Bernard EJ Burge, was shot dead by Anathbandhu Panja and Mrigen Datta.

Anathbandhu and Mrigen were killed by police bullets. Nirmaljiban and his friends Brajokishore Chakraborty and Ramkrishna Roy were picked up in connection with the killing and all of them were sentenced to death.

Nirmaljiban was hanged to death at Midnapore Central Jail.
