Revolutionary Santi Ghose was born on this day. She, along with Suniti Choudhury, was sentenced to transportation for life for assassinating a British official when both were 16. Both were students of Nawab Faizunnesa Government Girls High School of Comilla. They had joined Jugantar Party, which believed in armed struggle. On December 14, 1931, they walked into the office of district magistrate of Comilla Charles Geoffrey Buckland Stevens, ostensibly to present him with Christmas gifts, but they shot at him from point blank range. In February 1932, Ghose and Choudhury were produced in court in Kolkata and were sentenced to transportation for life (banishment). They were released in 1939. Later in Independent India, Ghose served on the West Bengal Legislative Council and the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
