On this day, the first issue of Calcutta Gazette, one of the oldest newspapers in India, was published. The English newspaper was founded by Francis Gladwin, an East India Company officer.

The newspaper published public information and advertisements and became an important platform of communication. It published government advertisements for free in exchange of free postal services. After this benefit from the government stopped, Arthur Muir, Herbert H. Harrington and Edmond Morris took over the running of the newspaper.

After the publication of Government Gazette, all government advertisements and a substantial amount of private advertisements went over to the new publication. Calcutta Gazette stopped being published from 1818.
