On this day the Rajdhani Express made its first journey from Howrah to New Delhi. This was the return journey; the service had commenced on March 1, from New Delhi to Howrah.

The train covered the distance of 1,450km between the two cities in 17 hours 20 minutes. In 1972, the second Rajdhani Express was introduced from Mumbai.

The service was introduced following a study commissioned by the Railway Board of India to increase the speed of trains. The upper limit then was 96km per hour on broad gauge lines. In February 1969, the Centre announced an express train capable of reaching a speed of up to 120km per hour.
