On this day, Swami Vivekananda gave Margaret Noble the name Sister Nivedita and
initiated her into a life of brahmacharya. This was one of the most important years of Nivedita’s life.

She had arrived in Kolkata in January 1898, after meeting Vivekananda in London in 1895 and being deeply influenced by his vision and philosophy. In March 1898, Nivedita met Sarada Devi for the first time. In May, Nivedita travelled to the Himalayas with Vivekananda and his other disciples.

In November, Sarada Devi inaugurated the girls’ school Nivedita founded in the city.
