On this day the India-Bangladesh treaty of peace and friendship was signed in Dhaka by the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Gandhi had reached Dhaka on March 17 for the second bilateral summit between India and Bangladesh after the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. The summit concluded with a joint declaration on five principles of peaceful co-existence and the signing of the treaty, which laid down a framework for India-Bangladesh relations.
The treaty went beyond the local: it called for the forging of bilateral ties in keeping with the national interests of both the countries, as well as the interests of peace in Asia and the world.
