The National Archives of India, originally named Imperial Record Department, was established on this day by the British government in India. The institution is the custodian of the records of enduring value of the government of India.
It is under the Union ministry of culture.
After the capital of the British-ruled India was transferred from Kolkata to Delhi in 1911, the present building of The National Archives was constructed in 1926. It was designed by architect Edwin Lutyens. All records were transferred from Kolkata to New Delhi by 1937.
In the archives’ vast repositories, which include public records, manuscripts and private papers, documents start from the year 1748. They are in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, other Indian languages and English. They include files, maps, bills, treaties, gazettes and census records. The archives are a treasure trove, but there has been criticism of the negligence with which the records are maintained.
In recent years, The National Archives of India has held two exhibitions, one on Subhas Chandra Bose and the other on Kashmir.
