On this day the Nawab of Bengal and Bihar, Najabat Ali Khan, also known as Saif-ud-Daulah, passed away.

He belonged to the line-up of Bengal and Bihar Nawabs who followed Mir Jafar and remain obscured by history. He was the third son of Mir Jafar by Munni Begum. He was crowned Nawab when he was 17 and reigned under the regency of his mother. He was only a figurehead as the real control of the region had passed on to the hands of the British. The East India Company paid him a reduced stipend. As the Great Bengal Famine raged, an outbreak of smallpox that had occurred at the same time claimed his life. He was laid to rest at Jafarganj Cemetery in Murshidabad.
