On this day the last Viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten put forward a plan that was to determine the future of India and lead to the second Partition of Bengal.

The plan, which became the basis of the Indian Independence Act, 1947.

In the June 3 plan, also known as the Mountbatten plan, the principle of the partition of British India was accepted by the British Government. It further stated that successor governments would be given dominion status; autonomy and sovereignty would be given to India and Pakistan, which could make their own constitutions; and princely states could join either India or Pakistan, depending on their geographical location and people’s choice.
