On this day British Governor-General in India Lord Bentinck and Thomas Babington Macaulay, author of the famous minute on Indian education, met for the first time — in Ooty. Macaulay’s minutes virtually established the foundation of western education in India.
Lord Bentinck had annexed Coorg in April, 1834, and was staying in Ooty when Macaulay, who had accepted the Governor-General’s invitation to be a Law Member of the Governor-General’s Council, arrived.
Their first meeting took place at Rambold’s Large House, a grand hotel, which later became Ooty Club. Lord Bentinck was staying there. Macaulay chose a small cottage.
