On this day the Bengali journal Sanjibani, published from Kolkata, made the suggestion of boycotting foreign goods. After the Partition of Bengal was announced on July 20, 1905, the boycott became the foundation of the Swadeshi movement.

Sanjibani had been started by Krishna Kumar Mitra, journalist, nationalist and a Brahmo leader. Mitra had started the journal in 1883. One of its first major accomplishments was a series on the condition of tea estate workers in Assam. The series forced the government to take some action.

On August 7, 1905, at a meeting in Town Hall, Kolkata, the Swadeshi movement was formally announced. The British reversed the Partition in 1911.
