On this day the British administration established the Sylhet district. It remained a part of Bengal Province under Dhaka Division until 1878.
That year Sylhet was moved to the newly created Assam Province and it remained a part of Assam till 1947, the year of Indian Independence, except during the reorganisation of the provinces during the previous Partition of Bengal in 1905, which was withdrawn.
Sylhet became a part of East Pakistan in 1947.
In December 1782, just after Sylhet was established as a district, an uprising by the local Muslim population during Muharram took place against the British. The uprising, called Muharramer Hangama, was led by the Pirzada and his two brothers, Syed Muhammad Hadi and Syed Muhammad Mahdi. It was crushed by the British and its leaders killed.
