On this day, the Irish-born Margaret Noble, who would later come to be known as Sister Nivedita, arrived in Kolkata on the ship Mombasa and was received by Swami Vivekananda. She would meet Sarada Devi, who shared food with her, breaking an old taboo, in March. A few days later, she would be initiated by Vivekananda into Brahmacharya and named Nivedita. She would travel in the Himalayas with Vivekananda. In November 1898, only a few months after coming to Kolkata, she would start a girls’ school in Bagbazar that was inaugurated by Sarada Devi in the presence of Vivekananda. The school, now known as Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Sister Nivedita Girls’ School, was an important step in women’s education here. She worked tirelessly to bring relief when plague broke out in Kolkata. She actively supported the freedom movement in India and wrote several books, including Kali the Mother and The Master as I Saw Him (on Vivekananda).
