On this day, Subhas Chandra Bose was arrested again, after being severely injured in a lathicharge by the police when he was leading a procession as the mayor of Kolkata to hoist the flag of India, defying a ban. Several others were severely injured.

Bose spent the next 24 hours in police custody. It was found later that he had injured two of the fingers in his right hand.

On January 26, 1930, the notion of Purna Swaraj had been announced.

The Indian flag had been hoisted by Jawaharlal Nehru on December 31, 1929, in Lahore, and the Congress had asked the people of India to observe 26 January as Independence Day.
