On this day, the song Janaganamana adhinayaka jaya he, written by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted as the national anthem of India by the Constituent Assembly.

The song had first been sung on December 27, 1911, at the Kolkata session of the Indian National Congress.

The original song consists of five stanzas, but only the first stanza was adopted as the national anthem. It takes approximately 52 seconds to be sung. The song conveys the idea of India as a diverse land, of many regions, but united as a nation.
