Dwijendranath Tagore, the eldest son of Debendranath Tagore, died on this day.

He was a man of many talents, like several of his family members. He was a poet, philosopher, composer and mathematician, pioneered writing notations for Bengali songs and created a Bengali shorthand.

He translated Kalidasa’s Meghadutam from Sanskrit into Bengali. He wrote a number of books on philosophy, on the difference of religions and on the concept of Advaita.

His mathematical writings were of great interest. He wrote on Boxometry, the structure of the box, calling it Baksamiti.

He had edited the Bharati Patrika for seven years since its start in 1877. The renowned Bengali weekly, Hitabadi, owed its idea to Dwijendranath. He wrote and composed several patriotic songs and Brahmasangeet. He is said to have introduced svaralipi, or notation, to Bengali songs, which is a hallmark of Rabindrasangeet.

He spent his last days in Santiniketan, where his younger brother Rabindranath had established Visva-Bharati.
