On this day, the following advertisement was published in The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, the first newspaper printed in Australia:
“Joseph Underwood begs leave to inform that who have favoured him with their Commands heretofore… he can accommodate them at a reasonable Rate with all Articles the Produce of India; among which are the following, viz. Teas of the best kinds, sugar, Piece Goods per Bale or in smaller Proportions, &c. &c. &. And for the accommodation of respectable Traders and others, he begs to add, that upon competent Security a proper Allowance of Credit will be given. And he further begs leave to add, that in consequence of his established Correspondence with the first Mercantile Houses in Calcutta, he will find himself capable of furnishing regular Supplies to all who may think proper to treat with him.”
