On this day the first event of the 1857 Uprising took place in Berhampore in Bengal. The 19th Native Infantry, having heard from Indian soldiers from Barrackpore about the Enfield rifle, refused to receive their percussion caps for the next days’ parade. The parade was cancelled.
The soldiers continued to perform their ordinary duties, but their disobedience was noted by the British government. On March 29, in Barrackpore (also in Bengal) soldier Mangal Pandey would attack British officers. The impact of this event was felt across India, which would soon be shaken by the uprising of Indian soldiers, who would be joined by various Indian states. Though quelled, the uprising would leave a lasting impression on British authorities.
