Distinguished Sanskrit scholar Mahamahopadhyay Mahesh Chandra Nyayratna Bhattacharya CIE was born on this day. He combined classical scholarship with a progressive outlook.

He was an expert in the Kavya, Smriti, Vedanta and Alankar branches of classical Sanskrit scholarship. He was also a scholar of the Vedas, Upanishads and Vedanta.

He began to teach at Sanskrit College in 1864 and was appointed its principal in 1876, a post he held for the next 19 years. During his tenure he introduced Sanskrit title examinations, Adya, Madhya and Upadhi.

He established an English school in his village, Narit, in Howrah. The Howrah-Amra railway line was built due to his effort.

He edited parts of Taittiriya Sanhita for Asiatic Society, and Mimamsa Darshan. He was made a CIE, Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire, in 1881. The title Mahamahopadhyay was conferred on him in 1887, on the occasion of the jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria.
