On this day admission of students started at Medical College, Calcutta. In 1833 the British government of India, with William Bentinck as Governor-General, recommended a medical college for the education of Indians. This led to the establishment of Medical College, Bengal, on January 28, 1835. The institution later came to be known as Medical College, Calcutta, or Calcutta Medical College, and is one of the oldest schools and hospitals teaching western medicine in Asia.
From about a hundred applicants, only 20 were selected. On successfully completing their course, candidates would get certificates to practise surgery and medicine. They could also apply for public service as “native doctors”.
The first batch of students included renowned names such as Umacharan Seth, Rajkrishna De, Dwarakanath Gupta and Nabin Chandra Mitra. The batch took the final examination on October 30, 1838.
Some of the most distinguished medical practitioners in India have studied at this college.
