On this day Swami Vivekananda returned to Kolkata to a grand welcome after his travels in the West.
Vivekananda was in Chicago in 1893 to take part in the Parliament of Religions held in September.
On February 19, 1897, he reached Budge Budge by a steamer from Madras, from where he took a train to Sealdah station. Crowds had been gathering at Sealdah from daybreak.
By the time Vivekananda’s train reached Sealdah, thousands had collected on the platform and the streets around the station. Arches had been put up on many streets.
While Vivekananda was visiting England, he had met Margaret Elizabeth Noble. She would later become known as Sister Nivedita. Vivekananda would visit the West one more time.
