On this day, Mahatma Gandhi visited Santiniketan for the first time.
Gandhi visited Santiniketan eight times between 1915 and 1945.

On his first visit, Gandhi was accompanied by his wife Kasturba. But he did not meet Rabindranath Tagore as the poet was in Kolkata.
Gandhi stayed at Santiniketan for two days. He was quoted in the journal Tattvabodhini Patrika as saying: “The delight I feel today I have never experienced before. Though Rabindranath, the Gurudev, is not present here, yet we feel his presence in our heart. I am particularly happy to find that you have arranged for the reception in the Indian manner.”
