On February 15, 1822, John Vaughan was appointed Town and Fort Major of Fort William in Kolkata, a post he held till his death in 1830

On February 15, 1822, John Vaughan was appointed Town and Fort Major of Fort William in Calcutta, a post he held till his death in 1830.

Earlier, he had served British East India Company with distinction in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, Second Anglo-Maratha War and Third Anglo-Maratha War.

He was appointed ADC to the Governor-General and accompanied Lord William Bentinck in his visits to Penang, Malacca and Singapore in 1829.

The same year Vaughan was promoted to colonel.

In 1830, he accompanied the Earl of Dalhousie, commander-in-chief of the Bengal Army, to China.

He passed away at Fort William, Calcutta, on November 1, 1830.
