On this day, a letter was sent from Kolkata regarding financial matters to James Baillie Fraser Esqr., Care of Rickards Mackintosh & Co., London, via Portsmouth on the East India Company ship Prince Regent. The letter, carrying the Kolkata General Post Office stamp, was delivered in London on June 7, 1825.
James Baillie Fraser was a Scottish travel writer and artist. He was well-known for his watercolours of landscapes, many of which were in the “picturesque style”. He was the brother of William Fraser, British administrator in Delhi during the reign of the last Mughal emperor. The ship Prince Regent was launched at Blackwall in 1811. It made ten voyages for the British East India Company. It carried this letter during its seventh voyage. It had arrived at Diamond Harbour on October 9, 1824.
