The first blast furnace of the Durgapur Steel Plant was commissioned on December 29, 1959. The plant, a part of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), was set up in the late 50s with an initial capacity of 2 million tonne crude steel per annum.

The first ingot was cast at the plant on April 24, 1960, in its steel melting shop, and the day is observed as Durgapur Steel Plant Day. The plant was taken through an intensive technological upgrade in the 90s. It helped the plant to adopt a new process of steel manufacturing. Two blast furnaces and a wheel plant have been modernised.

The plant now has a capacity to produce 1.92 million tonne hot metal, 1.876 million tonne liquid steel and 1.586 million tonne saleable steel. The plant authorities feel that this capacity makes the plant globally competitive.
