From December 28 to December 30, 1883, the first Indian National Conference session was held in Calcutta at Albert Hall.
Surendranath Banerjea had founded the Indian Association in 1876 to initiate conversation on the idea of India as a political entity. The Indian National Conference was a series of sessions held to discuss the idea.
The first Indian National Conference session was prompted by the Introduction of the Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill (1883-1884), or Ilbert Bill. Anandamohan Bose spoke of this conference as the first step towards a national Indian Parliament. The session demanded representative assemblies of the people of India.
The second Indian National Conference was also held in Calcutta, from December 25 to December 27. The Indian Association was joined in this by the National Mohammadan Association and the British Indian Association.
Immediately after the conclusion of the second session of the Indian National Conference, the first session of the Indian National Congress was held in Bombay, on December 28, 1885.
As both of the organisations had similar goals, the Indian Association merged with the Indian National Congress.
