On this day the Supreme Court of Madras was established in East India Company-ruled India.
The Regulating Act of 1773 had paved the way for establishment of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Calcutta. In Madras, the Recorder’s Court was replaced by the Supreme Court from December 26, 1800. Sir Thomas Strange the first Chief Justice.

At first, the Supreme Court in Madras functioned from Choultry Gate Street in the Fort. Then it moved to a palatial house where Tipu Sultan’s two sons had been held hostage. Finally it was located in Bentinck’s Building, later the Collector’s Office, from 1817.
The High Court of today replaced the Supreme Court on August 19, 1862.
