On this day, the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, arrived in Calcutta. An impressive reception was held in his honour. Pavilions were set up on the banks of Prinsep Ghat and decorated with garlands. The prince was greeted by Viceroy Northbrook and
Many maharajas, including Ranbir Singh, the Maharaja of Kashmir.
The prince, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, was travelling the Indian subcontinent to forge diplomatic links between Indian rulers and the British crown. He exchanged gifts with each of the rulers he met and acquired some of the most significant Indian works of art in the Royal Collection today. The Prince visited 21 towns and cities during this tour. There is a drawing depicting the reception held for the prince by William Simpson, a draughtsman and printmaker, who worked for the Illustrated London News.
