Physician Radha Gobinda Kar (R.G. Kar), whose efforts contributed in a major way to the establishment of the medical school and hospital that later became known as RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, died on this day. His father, Durgadas Kar, was also a well-known physician.

Radha Gobinda studied at the Calcutta Medical College and later obtained a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1883. He wrote several books on medical practices in a lucid manner for students of medicine. He worked relentlessly, despite many odds, with other doctors to establish a medical institution not dependent on the British administration. This resulted in the founding of Calcutta School of Medicine in 1886. It later was named The Calcutta Medical School and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bengal in 1904. It would be renamed Belgachia Medical College, Carmichael Medical College and finally, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
