John Herbert Harington, British orientalist, administrator and judge, who held important offices in Bengal, died on this day. He was 63.
He joined East India Company as a writer in August 1780. He subsequently worked in the revenue department and as judge in the Sadar Dewani Adalat (revenue court) and the Nizamat Adalat (criminal court). He was later appointed a member of the Supreme Council, the highest body of executive government in British India. He was president of Asiatic Society from 1825 to 1828. He published in two volumes from Calcutta the works of Saadi Shirazi, the renowned Persian poet.
